Kuki-Zo Forum Intensifies Demand for Separate Administration in Manipur
Call for Justice Amid Allegations of Human Rights Violations
Churachandpur, December 5, 2024
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), a prominent body representing the Kuki-Zo tribes of Manipur, has intensified its demand for a separate administrative region following the tragic deaths of 12 tribal youths. Of these, 10 were allegedly killed in a gunfight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jiribam district on November 11, while the other two died in separate incidents.
Judicial Inquiry Demanded
The ITLF has called for a judicial probe into the deaths, asserting that the victims were unarmed “village volunteers†safeguarding their communities amid the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur. According to the ITLF, the state's security forces have disproportionately targeted tribal communities under the guise of maintaining law and order.
A spokesperson for the ITLF emphasized, “The killing of our youths is a grave violation of human rights. We demand an impartial investigation to ensure justice and hold those responsible accountable. The rights of indigenous tribes cannot be trampled under the pretext of security.â€
Historical Context of the Conflict
The ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities in Manipur is rooted in longstanding grievances. The Kuki-Zo community has consistently raised concerns about political marginalization, economic neglect, and threats to their cultural identity. In light of these issues, the demand for a separate administration has emerged as a critical step to ensure their safety, autonomy, and socio-economic development.
Human Rights Concerns and International Attention
Human rights organizations have expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in Manipur. Reports of alleged extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and excessive use of force by security personnel have drawn criticism from both national and international observers.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have urged the Indian government to address the human rights situation in the region. They emphasize that the protection of indigenous rights and the establishment of accountability mechanisms are essential for lasting peace.
Path Forward
The ITLF has urged the central and state governments to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at resolving the conflict. “Our demand for a separate administration is not a call for division but a necessity to protect our people’s rights and preserve our cultural heritage,†the ITLF stated.
As the situation in Manipur remains tense, the call for justice, peace, and recognition of tribal rights continues to resonate across the region and beyond.
