Vice President Dhankhar Declares a New Era for Jammu & Kashmir Post Abrogation of Article 370
J&K’s Transformation Highlighted at SMVDU Convocation
Jammu and Kashmir has embarked on a transformative journey following the historic abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said while addressing the 10th convocation at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU). The event, held at the Matrika Auditorium on Saturday (February 15, 2025), saw the presence of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Education Minister Sakeena Firdous.
He asserted that the region, once labeled as a conflict zone, has undergone a significant shift, with its people now looking toward a future filled with opportunities and progress.
Fulfilling the Vision of ‘One Nation, One Constitution’
In his address, Dhankhar made an indirect reference to BJP ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who had famously advocated for "Ek Desh Mein Ek Nishan, Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan" (One Nation, One Flag, One Constitution). He stated that the long-cherished dream has been realized with the removal of Article 370, which had granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.
“The region now stands fully integrated with the rest of India, ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all its citizens,” he emphasized.
Jammu & Kashmir’s Rising Aspirations Post-2019
The Vice President highlighted the growing aspirations of the people in Jammu and Kashmir, pointing out that the abrogation of Article 370 has brought political stability, improved governance, and enhanced economic prospects.
He stressed that the new policies and development projects in J&K are focused on empowering youth, boosting entrepreneurship, and strengthening the education sector. “The people of this sacred land no longer feel restricted by outdated provisions. Instead, they are actively participating in India’s growth story,” Dhankhar added.
Lt. Governor and CM Acknowledge Winds of Change
Speaking at the convocation, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah echoed similar sentiments, stating that J&K is on a fast track to modernization and development.
CM Omar Abdullah remarked that while challenges remain, the focus is now on good governance, employment generation, and social upliftment. “Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a new dawn—one where merit, equality, and aspirations take center stage,” he said.
Education as the Cornerstone of J&K’s Progress
Education Minister Sakeena Firdous highlighted the role of education in the region’s development. She noted that the government is prioritizing access to quality education, skill development, and research opportunities for students.
“With new universities, better infrastructure, and scholarships for students, we are ensuring that the youth of Jammu and Kashmir have the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world,” she said.
The Road Ahead: A Vision for a Progressive J&K
Vice President Dhankhar concluded his speech by reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir. He urged students and young professionals to contribute to the region’s progress and embrace the opportunities available to them.
“The youth of Jammu and Kashmir are the architects of its future. The nation stands with them in their pursuit of excellence, innovation, and success,” he stated.
With this renewed sense of purpose and development, Jammu and Kashmir is stepping into a new era, leaving behind past uncertainties and embracing a brighter, more integrated future.
