Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand has transformed into a stunning winter destination, as substantial snowfall covers its elevated peaks. Beginning late Friday night, snow has persistently fallen in the Darma and Vyas valleys, located near the borders with China and Nepal. While the breathtaking scenery has drawn numerous tourists to Munsiyari, the severe weather conditions have presented mixed outcomes for the local community, impacting transportation and daily activities.

Rainfall Impacts Lower Regions, Exacerbating Cold Wave Conditions

While the higher altitudes experience snowfall, the lower regions, such as Askot, Bangapani, Didihat, and Berinag, have been subjected to continuous rainfall. This persistent downpour has resulted in a notable decrease in temperatures, causing significant disruptions to daily activities and leaving local markets largely deserted.

Intermittent light showers were observed on Saturday morning, briefly interrupted by sunny intervals. However, heavy rainfall resumed by midday, compelling residents to remain indoors in search of warmth. The severe cold has notably affected the more vulnerable populations, presenting considerable challenges for many.

Snowfall Disrupts Transportation, Leaves Travelers Stranded

Transportation in the area has been critically impacted, with roads leading to Munsiyari often blocked due to accumulating snow. The Thal-Munsiyari route, which had been cleared early Saturday morning, subsequently became impassable as snowfall intensified in the Kalimuni and Betulidhar regions.

Stranded tourists and residents are hopeful for quick interventions from local authorities. Prolonged road closures could dampen travel enthusiasm and adversely affect the fragile tourism economy, which is heavily reliant on the winter season.

A Boon for Agriculture: Rain Revitalizes Crop Growth

For farmers in areas like Thal and Nachni, the rainfall has proven to be beneficial. This season's first significant rain has revitalized formerly parched crops and vegetables, instilling renewed hope within the agricultural community.

The Ramganga Valley, which had been shrouded in fog, saw some sunshine in the morning before rain resumed in the afternoon. Despite the agricultural benefits, the wet weather has left people confined to their homes, struggling to stay warm amid the chill.

Darma and Vyas Valleys Witness Heavy Snowfall

The Darma and Vyas valleys, located near the India-China and India-Nepal borders, have received over two feet of snow, causing significant disruptions. Villages in these remote areas are grappling with frozen water sources, blocked roads, and interrupted communication lines.

The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has suspended its construction projects in the region, and local residents are left with minimal access to essential services.

Amid these challenges, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel continue to patrol the border areas. Braving extreme conditions, the teams, led by Inspector Avinranjan Kumar, are ensuring border security even in areas like Gunji and Napalchyu, where snow has piled up.

In the Darma Valley, 14 villages have been completely cut off due to the season's third major snowfall. With roads blocked and communication lines down, residents are struggling to meet basic needs.

In Panchachuli, locals and tourists have resorted to melting snow for drinking water as natural sources have frozen solid. Homestay operators in the region are doing their best to accommodate tourists while grappling with these harsh conditions.
