India Commits ₹237 Crore to Sri Lanka for Education, Healthcare, and Agriculture: A Significant Step Toward Regional Development

In a notable initiative aimed at enhancing Sri Lanka’s education, healthcare, and agriculture sectors, India has allocated ₹237.1 crore for 33 development projects in the Eastern Province. This effort seeks to fortify socio-economic relationships and facilitate Sri Lanka's recovery and growth. The announcement was made on Tuesday following the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Sri Lanka’s Cabinet for the aforementioned projects.

Focus Areas for Development

India’s investment will be strategically distributed: ₹31.5 crore dedicated to education, ₹78 crore aimed at healthcare, and ₹62 crore earmarked for agriculture. These investments are anticipated to enhance infrastructure, empower local communities, and elevate the quality of life in underprivileged regions.

Educational Programs

As part of this agreement, beginning in 2025, 200 students from universities in Jaffna and the Eastern Province will benefit from monthly scholarships. Additionally, 1,500 Sri Lankan civil servants are set to receive training in India over the next five years, aimed at augmenting administrative skills and cultivating a proficient workforce.

Healthcare Improvements

The healthcare sector will benefit from modernized facilities, improved medical resources, and upgraded infrastructure.

These measures are crucial in addressing the growing healthcare needs of Sri Lanka’s population, particularly in rural regions.

Agricultural Support

For the agriculture sector, India will provide expertise and support for initiatives in dairy farming, fisheries, and sustainable agriculture practices. These efforts are expected to enhance productivity and ensure food security for Sri Lanka.

Energy and Infrastructure Cooperation

The partnership extends beyond development projects to include energy and infrastructure collaboration. India and Sri Lanka have agreed on electricity grid connectivity and a multi-product petroleum pipeline. The Sampur Solar Power Project will be expedited, and LNG will be supplied to Sri Lanka’s power plants, contributing to energy diversification and reducing dependency on fossil fuels.

India’s Long-Standing Support

India’s support for Sri Lanka is not new. Over the years, India has provided  billion in credit lines and grants, covering all 25 districts. Key projects include the Maho-Anuradhapura railway section signaling upgrade and the rehabilitation of Kankesanthurai Port.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

The announcement follows Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent visit to India. During bilateral discussions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development. Collaboration on a Unique Digital Identity Project and various infrastructure initiatives reflects the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.
