The festive season has brought a sharp surge in railway bookings, with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) registering its highest-ever number of ticket bookings in a single day. More than 20 lakh tickets were booked through the platform on September 7, highlighting the massive demand for train travel as passengers begin making plans for the upcoming festive period. According to IRCTC, a total of 20,06,353 tickets were booked on September 7. The figure comfortably exceeded the corporation's previous single-day record of 18,40,203 bookings, which was recorded during last year's festive season. The strong demand continued the following day as well, with IRCTC processing another 19,50,699 ticket bookings on September 8.
Festive Season Drives Unprecedented Railway Booking Demand
The latest numbers underline how heavily passengers depend on online railway ticketing, particularly when advance reservations open for popular routes. With a large number of people travelling to their hometowns and holiday destinations during festivals, demand for reserved seats can rise sharply within minutes of the booking window opening. IRCTC said online booking has now become the preferred method for securing reserved railway tickets. Nearly 89% of all reserved train tickets are currently booked online, making the reliability and capacity of the country's online reservation infrastructure increasingly important. The pressure is particularly visible during the first few minutes after the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) opens. According to IRCTC officials, the first 15 minutes between 8 am and 8:15 am consistently see the highest level of simultaneous booking activity. However, the data also shows that the majority of bookings do not happen during that initial rush. Depending on the day, around 8.43% to 14.14% of total bookings are completed during the first hour, while more than 85% are successfully processed later.
IRCTC Upgrades System to Handle Massive Traffic
The record-breaking booking numbers come after several significant changes were made to IRCTC's online ticketing infrastructure. The corporation has upgraded its Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system with the aim of handling significantly higher traffic and reducing the difficulties passengers can face during peak booking periods. IRCTC officials said the overall capacity of the system has been increased to approximately twice its earlier level. Along with infrastructure improvements, the platform has also received a redesigned user interface intended to make the booking process easier and more convenient. A beta version of the updated IRCTC interface was launched on July 15. One of the changes allows passengers to view seat availability across multiple travel classes, including Sleeper, AC 3 Tier and AC 2 Tier, on the same screen. The simplified presentation is designed to help passengers compare available options without repeatedly moving between different sections of the booking process. The improvements are particularly significant at a time when online railway reservations are handling millions of users on high-demand days.
Anti-Bot Measures Help Reduce Pressure on Booking Platform
Another major focus has been controlling automated traffic on the ticketing platform. High-demand railway routes can attract large volumes of automated requests, which can put additional pressure on online reservation systems and potentially affect genuine passengers trying to book tickets. To address this issue, Indian Railways has introduced anti-bot technology along with Content Delivery Network (CDN) capabilities. IRCTC officials said these measures have helped reduce malicious automated traffic by around 55% to 65% in recent months. The railway reservation system has also introduced restrictions for authorised ticketing agents during the opening period of advance reservations. Agents are not permitted to book ARP tickets during the first 10 minutes, from 8 am to 8:10 am. The measure is intended to give individual passengers a better opportunity to access tickets when reservations first become available.
Millions of Users Access IRCTC on Reservation Opening Days
The scale of demand becomes clearer from the number of people accessing the platform when a new reservation window opens. IRCTC officials said the NGeT system currently handles between 13.3 million and 17.4 million logins on each ARP opening day. During these high-traffic periods, the system processes between approximately 1.7 million and 2 million bookings. The introduction of Aadhaar authentication has also been linked to the reservation process. Aadhaar-authenticated users have been permitted to make bookings during the opening ARP window since October 2025, adding another layer to the system's efforts to ensure a more controlled and fair booking environment. The latest record suggests that demand for railway travel remains extremely strong as the festive season approaches. For millions of passengers, booking a reserved seat is an important part of their travel plans, making the performance of IRCTC's online system crucial during peak periods. With the platform now operating with significantly higher capacity and additional measures aimed at controlling automated traffic, IRCTC will face another major test as festive travel demand continues to build. The September 7 milestone not only represents a new booking record but also demonstrates the enormous scale at which India's railway ticketing network now operates online.
