India’s powerful BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after defence systems in Asia, with Indonesia now preparing to join the growing list of countries interested in acquiring the advanced missile platform. After successfully finalising a defence agreement with Vietnam, India is now in the final stages of discussions with Indonesia for another major BrahMos export deal. The development highlights India’s rising influence in the global defence market and reflects increasing international confidence in Indian military technology. The update came from Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh during his visit to Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue, one of Asia’s biggest security and defence summits. Singh revealed that the BrahMos agreement with Vietnam has already been signed, although an official announcement has not yet been made publicly. He further stated that negotiations with Indonesia are progressing quickly and a formal deal could be completed soon. The back-to-back interest from Southeast Asian nations comes at a time when regional tensions and maritime security concerns are increasing across the Indo-Pacific. Countries are now looking for faster, smarter, and more reliable missile systems capable of strengthening their defence preparedness, and India’s BrahMos missile is emerging as a preferred choice.

Why The BrahMos Missile Is Creating Global Attention

The BrahMos missile is not just another weapon system. Defence experts consider it one of the world’s fastest and most dangerous supersonic cruise missiles currently in active service. Developed jointly by India and Russia, BrahMos is capable of travelling at speeds close to Mach 3 — nearly three times the speed of sound. Because of this extraordinary speed, enemy air defence systems get very little reaction time, making interception extremely difficult. What makes BrahMos even more powerful is its versatility. The missile can be launched from land-based platforms, naval destroyers, submarines, and fighter aircraft. This gives military forces the ability to strike enemy targets from multiple directions during warfare. The missile is also known for its precision strike capability. Flying at very low altitudes above sea level, BrahMos can avoid radar detection before hitting targets with devastating accuracy. It is specially designed to destroy enemy warships, radar systems, military bunkers, and strategic infrastructure within minutes.

The BrahMos export success is also being viewed as a major boost for the government’s “Make in India” initiative in the defence sector. Over the last few years, India has aggressively pushed to become a global defence manufacturing hub by increasing indigenous production and reducing dependence on imports. With countries like the Philippines already operating BrahMos systems and Vietnam and Indonesia moving closer to joining the list, India’s missile diplomacy is clearly entering a new phase. Military experts believe many more nations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East could soon show interest in the BrahMos missile system due to its speed, reliability, and battlefield effectiveness.
