A disturbing incident has come to light in Gurugram, where a 46-year-old air hostess, hospitalized and placed on a ventilator due to a critical health condition, was allegedly sexually assaulted by a member of the hospital staff. The Gurugram Police have confirmed that an FIR has been registered, and a thorough investigation is currently underway.
The victim had arrived in Gurugram for airline-related training and was staying at a hotel when she experienced a near-drowning accident in the swimming pool. She was rescued and rushed to a private hospital for emergency treatment. However, as her condition began to deteriorate, she was transferred on April 6 to another private hospital located in the Sadar area of Gurugram.
It was at this second hospital that the alleged incident occurred.
Incapacitated and Assaulted
According to the police complaint filed by the victim, while she was unconscious and connected to life support equipment, she experienced inappropriate physical contact from hospital personnel. Due to her condition, she was unable to speak, move, or resist the alleged assault.
Despite her weakened state, the woman recalled sensing someone touching her inappropriately. “I was fully aware but physically paralyzed. I couldn't shout or defend myself,” the victim reportedly told the police.
She remained hospitalized until April 13, after which she was discharged and returned home with her husband. It was only then, in the safety of her home and no longer under sedation or surveillance, that she shared the harrowing experience with her husband.
Shocked and devastated, the couple promptly contacted the emergency helpline number 112 and later filed an official complaint at the Sadar police station, assisted by their legal advisor.
FIR Filed Under BNS Provisions
Following the victim’s complaint, the Gurugram Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), India's recently enacted criminal code that replaces the Indian Penal Code in certain jurisdictions.
A police spokesperson confirmed that an FIR has been lodged, emphasizing the gravity of the case. “This is a serious matter involving the safety and dignity of a patient under medical care. We are fully committed to uncovering the truth and bringing any guilty individuals to justice,” the official stated.
Police Probe Underway
As part of the investigation, statements from the hospital staff are being recorded. All employees who had access to the intensive care unit (ICU) and the patient’s room are under scrutiny. CCTV footage from various points within the hospital is also being carefully reviewed.
“We are analyzing hours of surveillance footage to determine who entered the patient's room during her hospitalization. No one will be spared if found guilty,” the police spokesperson added.
Authorities have also requested a detailed report from the hospital, including duty rosters, records of who was in charge during the critical days, and any prior complaints (if any) against staff members.
Hospital Yet to Issue Statement
As of now, the hospital where the incident allegedly took place has not released an official statement. Repeated attempts by media personnel to reach hospital administrators for comment have gone unanswered.
Sources suggest that the hospital management has been internally reviewing the allegations and may issue a public statement once preliminary findings are available. However, the silence has drawn criticism from women's rights groups and legal experts, who argue that transparency and cooperation with law enforcement are critical in cases involving such grave accusations.
Legal and Social Reactions
The incident has sparked widespread outrage both online and within the healthcare community. Advocacy groups have demanded stricter monitoring of patient care and accountability protocols within hospitals, particularly for those under sedation or critical care.
“This case is a stark reminder that vulnerability in healthcare settings can be exploited, and we need systemic safeguards to protect patients,” said a representative from a women’s safety NGO.
Legal experts have also weighed in, emphasizing that hospitals have an ethical and legal responsibility to ensure the safety and dignity of all patients. “If proven, this would not only be a violation of the patient’s rights but also an egregious breach of medical ethics,” said Delhi-based criminal lawyer Priya Mehta.
Family Demands Justice
The victim’s family has appealed for swift justice and urged authorities to prioritize the investigation. Her husband stated that the trust they placed in the hospital was betrayed in the most unimaginable way.
“We handed her over to the care of the hospital to save her life, but what happened is beyond comprehension. We will not rest until those responsible are held accountable,” he told reporters.
The family has also indicated they may pursue legal action against the hospital for negligence and breach of duty of care.
Public Outcry Grows
The case has gone viral on social media, with thousands expressing shock and disbelief. Hashtags such as #JusticeForAirHostess and #HospitalHorror have been trending, as netizens call for reform in hospital oversight mechanisms.
Several prominent voices, including celebrities and public figures, have condemned the incident and demanded government intervention to ensure such violations are never repeated.
Next Steps
As the investigation progresses, police are expected to release more details, including possible identification of suspects and any preliminary forensic evidence. The victim may also be asked to provide a detailed statement before a magistrate as part of legal protocol.
Meanwhile, women's safety advocates are calling for CCTV coverage in all hospital rooms and stricter hiring protocols for hospital staff, especially those working in intensive care units.
With public pressure mounting and the victim's testimony already setting the tone, the case may become a landmark for how healthcare institutions address and prevent sexual violence within their premises.
