The New Year began on an energetic note in Ranchi as thousands of visitors thronged the Khadi and Saras Mela on the very first day of 2025.
The fairgrounds were filled with enthusiasm, drawing attendees of all ages—including children, women, and youths—who arrived throughout the day, particularly during the evening. The ambiance was vibrant with festive spirit as visitors perused stalls, purchased handcrafted goods, and enjoyed live performances. Approximately 20,000 tickets were sold, contributing to an estimated attendance of 25,000 individuals on the opening day.
Highlighting Jharkhand’s Rich Heritage and Craftsmanship
The Jharkhand Tourism Department set up an interactive stall to promote the state’s rich tourist destinations, offering detailed information to visitors. A live sketching exhibition was one of the mela's highlights, drawing admiring audiences as artists displayed their abilities. Meanwhile, the carpet zone emerged as a favorite among shoppers, with Iranian carpets priced at around ₹2.5 lakh attracting attention. Additionally, visitors had the opportunity to participate in traditional pottery-making firsthand, under the guidance of knowledgeable craftspeople. The first day of the mela recorded sales of approximately ₹2 crore, reflecting the enthusiasm of both vendors and visitors.
Cultural Extravaganza to Add Spark to the Fair
With the conclusion of the state mourning period, the Art and Culture Department has planned an exciting lineup of cultural events starting from January 2nd. The cultural stage will come alive with performances by renowned artists, including Natuwa dance by Vishwa Dev Mahato and his team from Jamshedpur, and soulful Hindi singing by Zainab Zubin and her group.
For younger attendees, engaging competitions such as solo dance and popping balloon contests will be organized in two age categories: 5-9 years and 10-14 years. Children wishing to participate must register at the mela grounds by 11:00 AM.
A Combination of Entertainment, Art, and Tradition
The Khadi and Saras Mela serves as a premier platform that celebrates local artisans, craftsmen, and performers, effectively bridging the divide between tradition and modernity. Attendees had the opportunity not only to purchase distinctive handmade products but also to engage in live performances and interactive workshops. This event established an optimistic outlook for the year ahead, harmoniously integrating commerce, culture, and community engagement.
With more exciting activities and cultural showcases lined up, the Khadi and Saras Mela promises to remain a must-visit destination in Ranchi this season.
