As the tragedy at Nirvan Sanstha unfolds, concerns over the safety of mentally challenged children in shelter homes are growing. The crisis began on March 22, 2024, when nearly 70 children at the institution fell ill, displaying severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and acute stomach pain.

The situation escalated quickly, leading to the hospitalization of 24 children at Lokbandhu Hospital. Among them, 12-year-old Shivank was the first casualty on Monday, followed by Renu (15) and Deepa (12) on Tuesday. The latest victim, Suraj, succumbed to his illness on Thursday, bringing the total death count to four.

Health officials, including Lucknow Commissioner Roshan Jacob and District Magistrate Vishak G, visited Lokbandhu Hospital to evaluate the condition of the affected children and ensure they received proper medical care.

Did Contaminated Food Trigger the Illness?

As authorities investigate the cause of this devastating outbreak, suspicions are mounting over possible food contamination. According to initial reports, the children consumed a routine meal at Nirvan Sanstha on the night of March 22. However, within hours, several children began experiencing severe discomfort, leading to emergency hospital admissions.

A growing number of children at the shelter also showed symptoms of illness. Currently, 46 children are receiving treatment on-site under the supervision of medical experts from the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) office.

Doctors at Lokbandhu Hospital think the sickness might have come from bad food or a virus. Dr. Ajay Shankar Tripathi, the medical superintendent there, said the kids who got sick showed signs of food poisoning, like nonstop throwing up and diarrhea.
 

Food contamination is definitely a main suspect, but authorities are also looking into other possible culprits, like water contamination or bacterial infections. So far, the post-mortem exams for the kids haven't given any solid answers, and they're currently analyzing preserved tissue samples to get to the bottom of what caused their deaths.

As the death toll rises, administrative authorities are under increasing pressure to take swift action. Following the incident, a high-level investigation has been initiated to examine possible negligence in food preparation, hygiene, and overall management of the shelter home.
