The controversy began after a segment from "India's Got Latent" went viral, featuring an offensive remark by Ranveer Allahbadia. During the show, he posed an inappropriate question to a contestant:
"Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop?"
This distasteful comment sparked massive outrage on social media, with netizens calling out the YouTubers for crossing ethical boundaries in the name of entertainment. Given the severity of the backlash, authorities took swift action, leading to the FIR being filed.
Legal Charges and Investigation
The Guwahati Crime Branch has registered a case under several legal provisions, including:
Sections 79, 95, 294, and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023
Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000 (related to the transmission of obscene content in electronic form)
Sections 4/7 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 (regulating the exhibition of films and content)
Sections 4/6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986
The investigation is currently underway, with authorities looking into the role of each YouTuber and influencer involved in the show.
Ranveer Allahbadia’s Apology
Following the outrage, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology, admitting his mistake. He took to social media and said:
"My comment wasn't just inappropriate; it wasn't even funny. Comedy isn't my forte. I am just going to say sorry."
Despite his apology, many believe that the damage has already been done. Critics argue that public figures with millions of followers should be more responsible with their content.
National Commission for Women's (NCW) Response
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken note of the controversy, calling for stricter regulations on online content. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to introduce guidelines that prevent OTT platforms and social media influencers from promoting obscene and offensive material.
In a formal letter, the NCW requested immediate action against those responsible for allowing such content to be streamed online.
YouTube’s Action: Video Taken Down
Given the public outcry and government intervention, YouTube has officially removed the controversial episode from its platform.
Kanchan Gupta, Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, confirmed that the video was taken down as per government orders. This move has been largely welcomed by audiences who found the content offensive and inappropriate for public consumption.
Industry Reactions and Backlash
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has condemned the show, demanding an immediate ban on "India’s Got Latent." In a strong statement, AICWA called the content "abhorrent and vile," urging the film industry to boycott those involved in the controversy.
Several Bollywood celebrities and influencers have also spoken out, emphasizing that while humor is subjective, certain boundaries should not be crossed in the name of entertainment.
Political and Public Reactions
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the controversy, saying:
"Freedom of speech does not mean freedom to offend. Our society has certain moral standards, and violating them is absolutely wrong. Appropriate action should be taken."
Additionally, Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma criticized the YouTubers, stating that “such content degrades moral values and should not be tolerated in Indian society.
