Woman Stuck Inside Lift for 20 Minutes in Newly Inaugurated Bhopal Municipal Building
A major safety concern has emerged at the newly constructed Bhopal Municipal Corporation headquarters after a woman employee remained trapped inside a malfunctioning lift for nearly 20 minutes. The incident took place in the ultra-modern civic building located on Link Road No. 2 in Bhopal, raising serious questions about the safety systems installed in the ₹73 crore project.
The incident happened on Wednesday when the worker went from the ground floor to an upper level of the building via the elevator. Officials and witnesses claim that after a power outage interfered with operations, the elevator abruptly stopped in the middle of the second floor.
Panic Inside the Building After Lift Stops Midway
As the elevator became stuck, the woman reportedly called for help from inside the cabin. Her cries alerted nearby staff members and officials working in the building. Within minutes, tension spread across the premises as employees gathered around the lift area trying to understand the situation.
Eyewitnesses claimed that some people initially attempted to open the lift manually using screwdrivers and keys before the technical team arrived. The lack of an immediate automatic rescue mechanism created panic among those present.
Although the woman was eventually safely rescued, authorities reported that after being taken out of the elevator, she showed signs of fear.
Technical Team Reset the Lift System
The electrical engineering department of Bhopal Municipal Corporation subsequently verified that a technical team was dispatched to the scene right away following the incident.Engineers reset the lift system and restored operations, allowing the trapped employee to exit safely.
Officials stated that no physical injuries were reported, but the incident exposed possible shortcomings in the building’s emergency preparedness and elevator safety systems.
Bhopal Municipal Corporation Under Pressure
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation administration is under increasing pressure to clarify whether all safety regulations were appropriately implemented in the new headquarters in the wake of the incident.
Many have questioned the quality control and emergency response systems in one of Bhopal's most prominent civic projects, despite officials' assurances that the situation was handled swiftly.
The lift malfunction may have lasted only 20 minutes, but it has created a much larger debate about infrastructure safety, public accountability, and the true readiness of newly launched government buildings in Madhya Pradesh.....
