Arunachal Pradesh is really stepping up its game by kicking off a new training program focused on the latest criminal laws and prison welfare. This cool initiative, put together by the Pasighat campus of Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) in East Siang district, aims to boost the know-how of prison officials as they deal with recent changes in the law and procedural updates.

The program is a joint effort with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), so participants will get the scoop on the latest legal practices, modern correctional techniques, and how to manage prisons more effectively. By giving prison officials access to updated info and tools, this initiative is all about improving how the law is followed, ensuring ethical governance, and promoting effective correctional policies.

Empowering Prison Officials Through Legal and Technological Advancements

Addressing the event virtually, BPRD Director General Rajeev Kumar Sharma emphasized the importance of providing prison officials with updated legal knowledge and exposure to technological advancements. He highlighted that nearly 70% of prisoners in India are under trial, underscoring the crucial role of new criminal laws in expediting judicial processes and fostering improved correctional administration.

The training is designed to ensure that prison management aligns with contemporary legal frameworks while balancing security with rehabilitation. The programme delves into critical areas such as case documentation, evidence-based reporting, legal procedures, and the application of digital tools. Additionally, it provides training on surveillance techniques and forensic applications to ensure a comprehensive understanding of correctional policies.

A Blend of Online and Offline Learning for Effective Training

Structured as a blended learning initiative, the programme offers both offline and online training sessions to maximize participation and engagement. The offline module, currently in progress from March 4 to March 7, has welcomed 28 prison officials for hands-on learning. The online sessions are scheduled in two phases, from March 12 to 14 and March 17 to 19, ensuring flexibility for participants across different regions.

The initiative has garnered wide participation, with 80 nominations from 10 states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam, and Odisha. This broad representation reflects the growing recognition of the need for advanced training in prison management and legal compliance.

Insights from Experts and Law Enforcement Officials

During the keynote address, retired Inspector General (Prison) of Arunachal Pradesh, Michi Paku, shared valuable insights into correctional administration. His experience and expertise provided a practical perspective on the evolving role of prison officials in maintaining order and ensuring fair treatment of inmates.

Meanwhile, RRU Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Kalpesh H. Wandra stressed the importance of practical training, emphasizing the need for prison officials to gain hands-on experience in managing correctional facilities efficiently. He highlighted that theoretical knowledge must be complemented with real-world applications to drive meaningful change in prison administration.

Expanding Legal Awareness Beyond Prison Officials

East Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu lauded the initiative, suggesting that the training be extended beyond prison officials to include district administration personnel and civilians. He noted that broadening legal awareness can help foster a more informed society and strengthen the rule of law at all levels.

Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba also praised RRU’s contributions to law enforcement training in the northeast region. He specifically acknowledged its role in enhancing expertise in cyber security, investigative techniques, and road safety.
