PUDUCHERRY: The Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Mettupalayam has undergone a significant transformation, emerging as a cutting-edge training hub designed to equip students with industry-relevant technical skills. The institution offers 14 specialized trades, including EV maintenance, drone technology, industrial automation, and smart electrical systems—critical skills in today’s evolving job market.

The modernization initiative, backed by financial support from the central and Puducherry governments, is set to revolutionize vocational education in the region. Despite offering world-class training, the ITI faces an enrollment challenge, with student admissions yet to match the available capacity. While the institute has a sanctioned strength of 616 students, current enrollment stands at only 341. However, its placement record remains exceptional, with 100% of its students securing jobs across various industries.

Industry leaders have expressed keen interest in hiring trained professionals from the ITI. Recently, Puducherry’s Electricity Department sought to recruit 125 electricians but could only find 20 eligible candidates, highlighting the high demand for skilled workers. Additionally, companies in sectors like automotive, aviation, and manufacturing are actively hiring ITI graduates, with many securing lucrative job offers from multinational corporations.

Government Support & Industry Collaborations

To encourage student participation, the government has introduced several incentives, including a monthly stipend of ₹1,000, free uniforms, bus services, and meals. This initiative aims to make vocational training more accessible and attractive to aspiring technicians.

The ITI is also fostering partnerships with industry giants like Whirlpool, General Optics (Asia), and emerging EV firms, ensuring students receive hands-on training and job opportunities upon graduation. Experts emphasize that with India’s rapid shift toward electric mobility and automation, trained professionals will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the workforce.
