Sudip Roy Barman, a senior Congress MLA and former Tripura Minister, recently faced legal and administrative actions following allegations he made in the state Assembly. Barman accused Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma and an officer from the Chief Minister's Office of corruption linked to a ₹1,400 crore World Bank project for tribal development. These accusations led to a defamation lawsuit against Barman and Tripura Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha, who views the lawsuit as politically motivated.
Barman’s allegations against Debbarma include claims of illicit property acquisitions, both in Tripura and Delhi, and hidden business ventures, such as petrol pumps in the state. Days after he raised these charges, Barman also received an eviction notice from the MLA hostel, where he resides.
The Congress party condemns the actions, asserting that the charges reflect a deep-rooted issue of corruption within the state administration, particularly in sectors involving tribal welfare and public funds. Party leaders argue that this response is an attempt to silence opposition voices, calling it an assault on democratic principles.
The suit and eviction notice have amplified concerns about freedom of speech and the handling of political dissent in Tripura. The Congress party has demanded an impartial investigation into Barman's claims, emphasizing that the issues raised affect the state’s marginalized communities who are intended beneficiaries of the project in question.
