In a significant move aimed at urban development, the State Government has proposed the inclusion of Vanagaram and Adayalampattu village panchayats under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). This suggestion is a component of a bigger strategy to restructure local government in order to improve municipal infrastructure and streamline governance.

Expansion of GCC's Jurisdiction

If the proposed merger materializes, the GCC's geographical area will expand to 442 sq. km, accommodating a total population of approximately 67,04,456 residents. The goal of this development is to incorporate these rapidly growing suburban districts into the administrative and service infrastructure of the city.

Enhancing Quality of Life

An official order issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department on December 31, 2024, emphasizes that the merger will significantly improve the quality of life in these areas. Residents are expected to benefit from enhanced infrastructure, better waste management systems, improved roads, and streamlined civic services.

Public Participation and Feedback

The government has invited feedback from the public regarding this proposal. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to share their opinions and concerns with the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS), Fort St. George, Chennai: 600 009, within six weeks from the announcement.
