In a major boost to tourism and the local economy, Goa is preparing for a transformative upgrade at the Mormugao Port, with the construction of a state-of-the-art International and Domestic Cruise Terminal set to complete by March 2025. This ambitious project is expected to elevate Goa’s status as a premier cruise destination in Asia, supporting the surge in international cruise traffic and capitalizing on the 40% rise in cruise passengers during FY 2023-24 alone.
World-Class Cruise Terminal for Global Appeal
The new terminal will be equipped with 24 immigration counters, 10 check-in counters, and expansive lounges designed to streamline passenger flow and enhance traveler comfort. The international terminal will offer an immersive experience for global visitors, featuring a dedicated shopping zone, duty-free stores, and diverse dining options—all aimed at creating a seamless gateway to Goa's culture and heritage.
Domestic passengers won’t miss out, as the domestic cruise terminal promises 12 check-in counters, comfortable waiting lounges, and easy access to shopping and dining facilities. This development is part of Goa's strategic push to harness the growing cruise tourism market while ensuring that the port infrastructure aligns with international standards.
Economic Boom and Sustainable Development
With over 15% growth in cruise ship arrivals last year, the new terminal is expected to catalyze significant economic benefits, from local job creation to a boost in small businesses across the state. "This project will not only increase tourist influx but will also ensure sustainable practices in line with Goa’s green tourism vision," a senior official from Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) commented. The development is designed to handle a million cruise visitors annually, presenting immense opportunities for the hospitality and retail sectors.
New Employment and Local Business Growth
The terminal’s expansive facilities will create thousands of new jobs and spark business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, craftspeople, and food vendors. The inclusion of an “experiential shopping zone†is tailored specifically to cruise tourists but will also be open to the public, allowing local businesses to thrive as a part of this high-traffic tourism hub.
Ministerial Support and Strategic Tourism Plans
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who recently visited the project site, expressed optimism that the terminal would establish Goa as a leading cruise destination in South Asia, aligning with India’s broader tourism goals. This project, the minister said, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the “Blue Economy†and empowering coastal states through sustainable development.
