Baptist Church of Mizoram Calls for Population Growth to Avoid Future Crisis
Aizawl: The Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), the second-largest church denomination in the state, has urged its members to consider having more children, warning that a declining population could have severe consequences in the future. During its 129th assembly, the church passed a resolution emphasizing the need for awareness campaigns to encourage larger families among church members. The church leaders believe that an increasing population will not only strengthen the state socially and economically but will also have a profound impact on preserving religious and cultural values.
Declining Population a Threat to Society, Religion, and the State
The church leaders expressed deep concern over the steady decline in the Mizo population, stating that if the trend continues, it could result in a "disastrous" outcome. According to them, a shrinking population can lead to economic downturns, a weaker community structure, and diminished influence of religion and traditional values. Recognizing the potential threats, the assembly emphasized the urgency of taking proactive measures to ensure a stable and growing population.
Church Delegates Push for Awareness Among Married Couples
The highest decision-making body of the Baptist Church of Mizoram resolved that spreading awareness about the importance of having more children should be a priority. Delegates of the assembly agreed that churches at the local level must actively promote the message among married couples. The church believes that larger families will play a significant role in shaping a stronger and more self-sufficient Mizoram.
Church Also Focuses on Tackling Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS Spread
Apart from addressing the declining population, the assembly took a strong stand against the rising cases of drug addiction and HIV/AIDS in Mizoram. The church acknowledged that substance abuse and the spread of HIV/AIDS have led to the loss of many young lives in the state. To combat these issues, the BCM has urged all local churches to form dedicated committees that will work towards eradicating drug abuse and spreading awareness about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
Commitment to Social Welfare and Rejecting Lifetime Ban on Retired Pastors in Politics
The assembly also debated and ultimately rejected a proposal seeking a lifetime ban on retired Baptist church pastors from participating in politics. Church leaders emphasized that individuals who have served the faith and dedicated their lives to the church should not be restricted from taking part in governance and policymaking if they choose to do so.
BCM’s Decision to Distance Itself from Major Church Organizations
In a strategic move, the Baptist Church of Mizoram decided to distance itself from the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), an organization that brings together leaders from 16 different church denominations. Additionally, the BCM also reaffirmed its earlier decision to refrain from joining the Mizoram People's Forum (MPF), a church-based political advocacy group led by the Mizoram Presbyterian Church. These decisions indicate BCM’s independent stance on social and political matters, focusing on its unique vision and priorities for the future of the state and its members.
A Call for Stronger Families, Stronger Society
With the growing concerns over Mizoram’s declining population, the Baptist Church of Mizoram is taking a proactive role in encouraging its members to contribute to population growth. The church firmly believes that fostering larger families will help build a resilient, thriving society while preserving religious values for future generations.
Additionally, the commitment to fighting drug abuse and HIV/AIDS underscores the church's dedication to the overall well-being of the people. As the BCM moves forward with these resolutions, its role in shaping Mizoram’s social and religious landscape remains significant.
