Actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar recently shared an untold story about her early days in Bollywood. The celebrated star of Tamil and Telugu cinema revealed that she was initially chosen by the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor to play the lead role in his 1985 film Ram Teri Ganga Maili. However, she was replaced by Mandakini, a decision that Raj Kapoor made due to her age at the time.
"Raj Kapoor Ji Said, ‘She Is My Ganga’"
In an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Khushbu recounted how Raj Kapoor had envisioned her as Ganga, the film’s protagonist. She revealed that a photoshoot had even taken place, with Raj Kapoor declaring, “She is my Ganga.”
The initial plan was to begin shooting in Gangotri, but heavy snowfall delayed the schedule. Instead, the production team decided to film in Kolkata, starting with scenes set in a brothel where Ganga is shown as a mother.
At just under 14 years old, Khushbu’s youthful appearance posed a challenge. “Raj ji looked at me and said, ‘She is herself a kid, and a baby in her hand won’t look good.’ He couldn’t delay the project further, so he replaced me with Mandakini,” Khushbu shared.
Mandakini’s Rise to Fame
Ram Teri Ganga Maili became a landmark film upon its release in 1985. It was the last film directed by Raj Kapoor and introduced his youngest son, Rajiv Kapoor. The movie’s success was fueled by its melodious music, compelling storyline, and Mandakini’s powerful portrayal of Ganga.
Khushbu's Bollywood Debut and Shift to the South
Although missing out on Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Khushbu quickly found her footing in Bollywood. She made her debut as a lead actor in Meri Jung (1985). Shortly after, she transitioned to South Indian cinema, starting with the Telugu hit Kaliyuga Pandavulu (1986).
Relocating to Chennai, Khushbu became a dominant force in Tamil and Telugu cinema throughout the 90s, delivering numerous blockbusters and earning a massive fan following. Her popularity soared to such heights that fans built a temple in her honor—a testament to her stardom.
A Career Resurgence
After taking a break from acting, Khushbu made a comeback in 2021 with Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe. The film reignited her career and reintroduced her to a new generation of fans. In 2023, she starred in Vanvas, marking her return to Hindi cinema after over three decades.
"No Regrets"
Reflecting on her journey, Khushbu expressed gratitude for the experiences that shaped her career. “Everything happens for a reason,” she said. While Ram Teri Ganga Maili was a missed opportunity, Khushbu’s remarkable achievements in South Indian cinema and her foray into politics have cemented her legacy.
Her story highlights the unpredictability of show business, where setbacks often lead to new opportunities. Khushbu’s journey from a child artist to a cultural icon is an inspiring tale of resilience and determination.
